LEATHERHEAD ORCHESTRA APPOINTS NEW CONDUCTOR
Anthony Bonello has been appointed as the new conductor of Leatherhead Orchestra.
Anthony, who is currently studying for a PhD in Composition at Surrey University, hails from Malta. His conducting experience includes roles with the Count Roger Band of Rabat, Malta and the Lorenzo Perosi Choir of Montecatini in Italy. During his Masters course at Surrey University, Anthony also conducted the University Orchestra.
Announcing the appointment, Orchestra Chairman Frances Touch said: “We are really enjoying working with Anthony and are already making good progress under his leadership.”
Anthony Bonello commented: “This is a friendly orchestra with great potential and we are currently preparing a concert programme of music by Beethoven, Bizet and Schubert.”
Founded in 1954, Leatherhead Orchestra caters mainly for adult players but also welcomes younger musicians, including those with little or no orchestral experience
There are no specific entry standards or auditions but members need to have played for a couple of years, be playing reasonably in tune and be able to practise at home.
At the end of each term the Orchestra plays through the rehearsed programme in front of families and guests. This is followed by a supper to round off the evening.
The Orchestra currently has vacancies for string players and a percussionist. Anyone interested in joining the Orchestra should come along to a rehearsal at the Leatherhead Institute at 8pm on Wednesday evenings during term time or contact Membership Secretary Ian Russell at Ian@igrussell.demon.co.uk
