ASHTEAD CHORAL SOCIETY – CARMINA BURANA and BRAHMS LIEBESLIEDER
Dorking Halls on Saturday 28th April 2012 at 7.30pm,
Paul Dodds conducting Carl Orff’s magnificent Carmina Burana, last presented by the choir nearly 20 years ago, together with a selection of Brahms’ Liebeslieder.
Carmina Burana is the name given to a manuscript of 254 poems and dramatic texts from the 11th or 12th centuries, written principally in medieval Latin by students and clergy. The collection was found in 1803 in Bavaria and is now housed in the Bavarian State Library in Munich. 24 poems in Carmina Burana were set to music by Carl Orff in 1936 and are most recognised by the opening and closing movements, O Fortuna.
Ashtead Choral Society will perform it in its original version for two pianos and percussion.
The Liebeslieder (New Love Songs), also known as Neue Liebesliederwalzer, were written by Johannes Brahms and is a collection of romantic pieces written for voices and four hands on the piano. The Neue Liebeslieder were written during the Romantic period between 1869 and 1874. The text of the songs is adapted from folk songs of various areas of Europe including Turkey, Poland, Latvia and Sicily.
The choir will be accompanied for both pieces on the piano by Stephen Ridge and Simon Phillips.
Tickets are priced at £18.00 tiered, £16.00 Balcony and £14.00 Floor, under 18’s half price and can be obtained from the Box Office Manager on 07504 332354.
